Institute of Modern Art

  • Founded: 1975
  • Director: Robert Leonard
  • Location: Brisbane, QLD

Founded in 1975, Brisbane’s Institute of Modern Art (IMA) is Australia’s oldest contemporary-art space—and one of the most prominent contemporary-art spaces in the Asia-Pacific region. For forty-eight years, it has been the hub of Queensland’s contemporary-art scene, championing new artists, new art, and new ideas; feeding local voices into the global dialogue; and inspiring curiosity and change. Its exhibitions, events, publications, education programs, and offsite and touring projects connect diverse artists and audiences, locally, nationally, and internationally. The IMA is inclusive and accessible—entry is free. It promotes experimentation and criticality, inclusion and innovation, sustainability and care.
