Gertrude has been building the careers of Australia’s artists for almost 40 years.

Since our establishment in 1985, Gertrude has played an essential role in the local visual arts sector, shaping the careers of many of Australia’s most celebrated artists.

Respected nationally and internationally, Gertrude’s unique studio-exhibition model supports outstanding artists at pivotal moments in their careers. We are an incubator and launching pad for contemporary artists. Our artistic program – including our studio and exhibition program – is unique in its equal emphasis on the production and presentation of contemporary art.

Gertrude has sixteen highly-subsidised artist studios located at Gertrude Contemporary, 21-31 High Street, Preston South. Our annual exhibition program is curated across two gallery sites, Gertrude Contemporary and Gertrude Glasshouse, with key national and international project partnerships. The program offers exhibiting artists the opportunity to push the boundaries of their artistic practice and present ambitious new work to Gertrude’s diverse audiences.
